A sparkling Spring for Arrowfield graduates
As we look back at Spring racing, many owners & trainers have good reason to feel very happy with their purchases from recent Arrowfield yearling drafts.
In just 30 days, from 9 October to 7 November, six graduates of the farm – all but one sold at public auction by Magic Millions – won stakes races. Three of those won at Group 1 level, while across the Spring another 14 horses were placed in Group or Listed Races.
In addition, Magic Millions 2019 graduate Count de Rupee was a close second in the $7.5 million Golden Eagle, taking his earnings past $1.8 million – almost 13 times the price Robert & Luke Price paid for him.
Ottavio & Wendy Galletta’s $1.9 million Magic Millions sale-topper Profondo (Deep Impact-Honesty Prevails) kicked off proceedings with a dominant victory in the Spring Champion S. G1 at only his third start – a feat unmatched by any other Australian 3YO in recent history.
Four days later the Hawkes-trained Yearning (Snitzel-Rising Romance), a member of Arrowfield’s privately sold 2020 Easter draft, emulated her Classic-winning mother with success in the Thousand Guineas G1.
Next out was the brilliant Victoria Derby G1 winner Hitotsu (Maurice-Love Is Fickle) bought for $100,000 by Wendy Kelly for Kevin Payne who subsequently sold down to other partners and transferred the colt to the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace stable.
Profondo & Hitotsu join Anders, Invader, Showtime & Tagaloa as valuable stallion prospects bought from Arrowfield’s recent Magic Millions consignments.
Cup Day produced an encouraging debut third in the Maribyrnong Plate G3 performance by 2YO colt Le Gagneur (Shalaa-Rationality), purchased for $200,000 by trainers Robbie Griffiths & Mathew de Kock.
On Oaks Day, $500,000 buy Flying Evelyn (Not A Single Doubt-Champagne Run) powered home in the Red Roses S. G3, and $800,000 filly Satin Love (Snitzel-Madame Andree) was second at her 2YO debut in the Ottawa S. G3.
They’re in excellent company among the likes of Group-winning fillies Secret Agenda, Sweet Idea, Perignon, Honesty Prevails, Missile Mantra, Perignon & Scarlet Rain – all sold by Arrowfield at Magic Millions.
Stakes Day at Flemington produced the Stud’s fourth Magic Millions graduate stakeswinner this season when Bend The Knee (Snitzel-Kneeling), a $300,000 purchase by trainer John O’Shea, defeated his fellow Arrowfield graduate Port Louis in The Amanda Elliott LR.
A day later 5YO Tourbillon Diamond (Olympic Glory-Modave), bought for $7,000 by Neil Douglas from Arrowfield’s 2018 Magic Millions National draft, scored a gritty victory in the Sa Sa Ladies’ Purse G3 in Hong Kong. Raced as Eric the Eel in Australia where he was third in the 2020 Australian Derby G1, Tourbillon Diamond has now earned $1.6 million in a six-win, 26-start career.
Arrowfield will present a 73-lot consignment of yearlings at Magic Millions 2022 – view the draft here.
