7th Group 1 winner for Maurice

Maurice notched up the 7th Group 1 winner of his stud career when Cosmic Crusader rounded the field in Saturday’s $1.5 million Perth Racing Northerly S. 1800m G1, took control 200 metres out and withstood the challenge of Watch Me Rock to land his 8th win for owner-breeders Bob & Sandra Peters.

All of Arrowfield’s current stallions with runners have now added new Group 1 winners to their records in 2025, and in the year of his death, Snitzel posted 5, four of them new:

  • Castelvecchio – sire of Aeliana (Australian Derby G1)
  • Dundeel – Femminile (South Australian Derby G1)
  • Maurice – Cosmic Crusader (Northerly S. G1)
  • The Autumn Sun – Autumn Boy (Caulfield Guineas G1) & Autumn Glow (Epsom H. G1)
  • Snitzel – Lady Shenandoah (Coolmore Classic G1, Surround S. G1), Marhoona (Golden Slipper G1), Baraqiel (Moir S. G1), Transatlantic (Toorak H. G1) & Return To Conquer (Diamond S. G1)

Cosmic Crusader’s elite win came a fortnight after he missed a start in the Railway S. G1 – won by Watch Me Rock – and instead became Maurice’s 34th stakeswinner in the Carbine Club of WA S. LR. His career earnings now exceed $1.2 million.

Bob Peters said, “It’s really good to see, makes you wonder what might have happened in the previous race. He had an injury [in 2024] and I gave him the 12 months off to recover, and I think that was the making of him. He was a bit fine before, but he’s developed well and he’s a big, strong horse now.”

Trainer Michael Grantham celebrated his first Group 1 success for the Peters stable, and it was jockey Clint Johnston-Porter’s second victory at that level after winning the Railway Stakes aboard Port Lockroy 12 months ago.

Cosmic Crusader is the second foal of multiple stakeswinner Cosmic Storm (by Street Sense), a half-sister of Superstorm (VRC Cantala S. G1) & Listed winner Mikimoto, and a full sister of Listed winner Royal Command. Their wonderful dam, dual Group winner Stormy Nova, was sold to Oakland Park Stud in 2017 and left three more winners before her death last year.

Cosmic Crusader has a 2YO full brother named Cosmic Icon, and their dam is back in foal to Maurice, who has 21 yearlings catalogued for Magic Millions 2026, including 5 colts & 4 fillies offered by Arrowfield.
