Smart city wins by Duibio, Ondina & Peeping

A trio of Arrowfield-sired 3YOs all posted smart wins in city company on Wednesday that indicated their readiness for sterner tests during the Autumn.

Peeping (by Redoute’s Choice), at her first start since October, was full of running from barrier rise, but allowed Sam Clipperton to take hold of her and drop her in one off the rail behind the leaders. She accelerated at the 200-metre mark to come away for a comfortable 2.5 lengths win, with Lifesaver Lady second and Painted Gold third.

Clipperton said, “It was a nice win, the team has always had a high opinion of her.

“She won her first start impressively on a wet track on Hawkesbury then she went to Warwick Farm and ran third. She’s had a nice spell and come back in and looks to have a good preparation ahead of her.”

Peeping’s dam, dual Group winner Miss Marielle, is by Encosta de Lago whose daughters have already left Group 1 winner Musir, Group 3 winner & leading young sire Beneteau, stakeswinner Essington & recent 2YO stakeswinner Burnstone from only 18 runners by Redoute’s Choice.

Peeping is raced by her breeder Tom Kelly, whose family-owned Newhaven Park Stud will offer a full brother to Peeping at the Inglis Easter Sale in April.

Twenty minutes later over 1400 metres at Sandown, Not A Single Doubt’s son Duibio stepped up to strengthen trainer Ciaron Maher’s carnival hand. Winner of his previous start at Geelong, Duibio settled midfield, slipped into the firing line around the bend and rocketed home in the final 200 metres to defeat Lola Lu by 1.5 lengths with the favourite Distraught third.

Duibio, raced by Garry & Marianne Towzell, is from the Star Way mare Dazzling, a winning daughter of Brisbane Cup winner Limitless and a relative of Group 1 winners Veyron & Boundless.

Maher said, “His work last week at Caulfield on the course proper was the best work he’d done for us and he’s come on from his maiden win.

“If he can keep stretching out in trip, I think he’ll make a nice horse.”

Soon after Duibio crossed the line in Melbourne, Ondina (by Manhattan Rain) fought staunchly for an all-the-way victory over 1600 metres at Randwick. Ziggy Willie was a short neck away second and the favourite Rock Mylady finished third.

The Gai Waterhouse-trained Ondina (ex Mermaid Island by Mujadil) was a $40,000 Star Thoroughbreds purchase from the 2013 Magic Millions National Sale and is raced by David & Rhonda Henderson, Jan Henderson, Gaye Smith, Gary Greedy, Leon Laskey, Maureen & David Mcleish, Phillip Vanny, John Menzies, N B C Racing (Manager: Caroline Bayot) & Wayne Cook.

Ondina and Peeping are both nominated for the Australian Oaks G1 on 11 April.

The Arrowfield draft for next week’s Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale includes two colts and a filly by Redoute’s Choice, and one of each sex by Manhattan Rain and Not A Single Doubt.
