Two new stakeswinners for Redoute's Choice

It’s only five weeks since he claimed his third Sires’ Premiership, and already Redoute’s Choice has stamped his authority on the new season.

Saturday’s racing supplied the champion sire’s 117th and 118th stakeswinners, as well as hard-fought Group 2 placings by Lankan Rupee (MVRC Ian McEwen Stakes) and Royal Descent (ATC Chelmsford Stakes).

3YO colt Panzer Division played second fiddle to his stablemate Scissor Kick (also by Redoute’s Choice) in the ATC Up and Coming S. G3 on 23 August, but the lead role was his alone in Saturday’s  $125,000 ATC Ming Dynasty Quality H. 1400m G3.

Jockey Tye Angland took Panzer Division forward early from barrier 9 and the colt rolled along with Valentia in close attendance until the 250-metre mark. At that point Panzer Division lengthened stride and drove well clear of Valentia to score by 1.3 lengths from Shooting To Win, who made ground late, with the same margin back to Lady Sharapova in third position.

It was Panzer Division’s second win from only three starts, and gives trainer Paul Messara the option of starting him alongside Scissor Kick in next Saturday’s $1 million ATC Golden Rose S. G1.

Messara says, “It’s a hard carrot not to take, but we’ll have a look at him before making any definite decision.

“He’s a lovely horse that’ll be even better when he gets over further and there’s plenty of races for him this spring.”

Raced by Arrowfield and Wayne Cadman, Panzer Division was bred by Brent & Judy Hudson from the Hussonet mare Desert Fight, a dual Group 1 winner and Champion 2YO Filly in Chile, and he was purchased for $120,000 by Paul Messara at the 2013 Inglis Easter Sale. Desert Fight has a 2YO sister to Panzer Division and returns to Redoute’s Choice this Spring.

The Redoute’s Choice/Hussonet cross has also produced last season’s Champion South African 2YO filly Majmu.

A few hours later at Belmont in Perth, 4YO Rock Magic became the 21st stakeswinner from Redoute’s Choice’s remarkable 2009 crop when he won the $100,000 WATC Farnley S. 1400m LR.

It was Rock Magic’s fourth straight win for trainer Chris Gangemi and takes his career record to 8 wins, three placings & $265,965 from 16 starts.

Rock Magic, from New Zealand Group 1 winner Rockabubble (by Bubble Gum Fellow), was initially trained by Paul Messara to win four races for his breeders Arrowfield and Planette Thoroughbred after he failed to reach his reserve at the 2011 Inglis Easter Sale.  He was transferred to the Gangemi stable two months ago and subsequently sold to a large group of enthusiastic stable clients.

Rockabubble is due to foal to Animal Kingdom next month.

As for Redoute’s Choice, only his son Snitzel heads him, by a mere $9,977, on the current Australian General Sires’ table.
