Teeley Sale of a Generation makes history

Fifty-seven lots sold for a touch over $23 million at an average of $404,158 – the Teeley Dispersal at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale really did live up to its tagline, “The Sale of a Generation”.

It’s also safe to say it’s the first time, at least in Australasia, that ten million-dollar broodmares have been sold from a single draft on a single day, and the aura of Redoute’s Choice surrounded them all.

Nine of them were from the champion sire’s immediate family, and the tenth, Estelle Collection was bought by Coolmore Stud in foal to Redoute’s Choice for $1.4 million. The foal she carries is a full sibling to world champion sprinter Lankan Rupee.

The top price of $2.3 million was also paid by Coolmore for Monsoon Wedding, the only full sister to Redoute’s Choice, in foal to Pierro.

Second top price of $1.9 million, bid by New Zealand agent Dean Hawthorne, was required to secure The Broken Shore, a Hussonet half-sister to Redoute’s Choice and in foal to Fastnet Rock.

Another Hussonet mare, Monsoon Wedding’s daughter Your Life Style, made $1.2 million. She was one of 22 Teeley mares in foal to Manhattan Rain, and one of six purchases made from the Dispersal by Newgate Farm.

Newgate’s most expensive buys were the full sisters Quench The Thirst (in foal to Redoute’s Choice’s son Stratum) and Precious Lorraine, both by Encosta de Lago from Monsoon Wedding, and both knocked down for $1.5 million.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa al Maktoum was the successful bidder at $1.1 million for Unspoken Choice (Giant’s Causeway-Shantha’s Choice), in foal to Not A Single Doubt.

The same price was paid by a group of Dundeel’s New Zealand shareholders, Waimarama NZ Ltd, for city winner Rex Is A Star (Encosta de Lago-Sliding Cube). She will visit Dundeel after foaling to Pierro this coming Spring.

Drifting Cube, a full sister to Rex Is A Star, also made $1.1 million, and Manhattan Rain’s 3YO full sister Taste of Heaven was a $1.5 million purchase. Both were bought by James Harron Bloodstock & Kentucky-based Hill ‘n’ Dale Farm.

Another American buyer, John Moynihan’s Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings signed for Not A Single Doubt’s Group 1-winning daughter Miracles of Life at $900,000, as well as her dam Dazzling Gazelle, at $400,000.  Dazzling Gazelle (by More Than Ready) is due to foal again to Not A Single Doubt in August, while Miracles of Life transfers to the Sydney stable of Peter & Paul Snowden.

Arrowfield’s Bloodstock Manager Jon Freyer says, “We’re delighted to have been entrusted with selling such a wonderful group of mares and thrilled to achieve a history-making result for Teeley Assets.

“We’re very proud of our team’s great work to present the mares, and Magic Millions did a first-class job of conducting and marketing the sale. There were buyers from all round the world, and although not all of them were successful, they certainly under-pinned the prices.”
