Golden Slipper good news for Snitzel

Snitzel’s daughter Oakleigh Girl put up a fine effort to finish sixth in Saturday’s ATC Golden Slipper G1 at Rosehill, but the race produced even better news for Arrowfield’s dominant young sire.

Firstly, the winner Mossfun is the first runner, the first winner, the first stakeswinner and now the first Group 1 winner from a mare by Snitzel.

Mossfun was bred by Ian & Linda Duckworth of Fairview Park, with Heather McKinnon & Darren Pullman. Her dam Eye For Fun suffered a paddock accident which required the removal of an eye, so the Duckworths sent her to Mossman (by Success Express) as a 3YO. Another version of the same cross produced dual Group 1 winner Shamus Award (by Snitzel from a Success Express mare).

The result was a bay filly purchased for $85,000 by Emirates Park at last year’s Inglis Easter Sale and sent to the powerhouse Hawkes stable.

Mossfun has progressed rapidly from her stakes-winning debut in December, through Group 3 and Group 2 wins to success in the world’s richest juvenile race and earnings of $2,500,500.

That has pushed Snitzel up into 23rd position on the Australian Broodmare Sires’ list. In fact, the sensational son of Redoute’s Choice is the only stallion born in the 21st century to appear among the top 50 sires on that table.

Secondly, even after the distribution of the $3.5 million Golden Slipper prizemoney, Snitzel retains his lead on the General Sires’ list, with $7.8 million, almost $500,000 ahead of Exceed and Excel, whose daughter Earthquake ran very bravely for second in the Slipper.

Oakleigh Girl, Hot Snitzel (runner-up in the Sebring S. G3), and Scratch Me Lucky (second in The Schweppervescence G3), all helped Snitzel’s cause at Rosehill, earning $110,000 prizemoney among them.

Sixteen sought-after lots by Snitzel will be offered at the Inglis Easter Sale this coming week, among them two colts and a filly in the Arrowfield draft – view their videos, photos & pedigrees  here.
