Karuta Queen brave 2nd to Black Caviar

The presence of Australian racing’s current superstar Black Caviar in today’s $200,000 MRC Schillaci S. 1000m G2 deterred most potential rivals, but not Glenn & Viive Williams, Neville Layt and their brave filly Karuta Queen.

The 3YO daughter of Not A Single Doubt headed to Melbourne after two fine efforts against the best Sydney colts, and a strong win in the the ATC Heritage S. LR on 17 September. Today she bounced out of the gates in trademark fashion and led the field until Black Caviar swept past at the top of the straight to her 14th consecutive victory, breaking 57 seconds in the process.

Karuta Queen was left to fight on for second place, and fight she did, holding the runner-up position, 4.5 lengths from the mare whose latest rating of 130 placed her behind only Frankel among the world’s best racehorses. Karuta Queen’s record reflects her competitiveness: 5 wins and three placings from ten starts, and prizemoney of $1.6 million, largely thanks to her Magic Millions 2YO Classic win last season.

Bred by Stuart Ramsey from Card Queen (by Final Card), Karuta Queen was purchased for $30,000 by Glenn Williams from the Turangga Farm draft at the 2010 Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale.
