Fulton flies in Singapore Group 3

Champion sire Flying Spur made it two Group winners for the weekend, and three stakeswinners for the season when Flying Fulton gave New Zealand trainer Mark Walker his first black-type win in Singapore on Sunday evening.

The 5YO gelding, from the Zabeel mare Fulton, scored a comfortable, one-length victory in the $S200,000 Singapore TC Committee’s Prize Sing-3 for his owner, the Te Akau Racing Stable. A stakes-winning 2YO in New Zealand, Flying Fulton has now won seven races and the equivalent of more than $360,000.

That performance followed the success of Flying Spur’s 3YO daughter Bliss Street in Saturday’s MRC Thousand Guineas Prelude 1400m G3 in Melbourne. Another 3YO filly by Flying Spur, Satin Shoes won the VRC Quezette S. LR at Flemington last month.

Flying Spur is the sire of 750 individual winners worldwide, 83 of them at Group or Listed Stakes level, and was Australia’s champion sire in 2007. Flying Fulton is descended from the great producer Gypsy Moss, dam of G1 Our Planet and G2 Gypsy Kingdom, and ancestress of a host of other stakeswinners, among them Group 1 winners Ideal Planet, Innocent King & Unearthly.

Bred by Anthony & Joseph Bongiorno, Flying Fulton was sold to David Ellis for $210,000 at the 2008 New Zealand Bloodstock Ready to Run Sale by Mana Park.

His trainer said after Sunday’s win, “David always buys beautiful athletes and this bloke is certainly one. He has come through as an older horse and I think he will improve further.” The immediate target is the Kranji Mile G1 on 2 October.

Flying Spur is also the sire of the marvellous Singaore campaigner Lim’s Fighter, winner of 11 races and $1.2 million over seven seasons and now competing as a 9YO in Malaysia – where he was third on Saturday.
