Snitzel filly earns Flemington black type

3YO filly Zelsnitz (ex Eishin Maysville by Jade Hunter) became the sixth stakes performer by 2nd Season sire Snitzel when she ran on gamely for third in today’s $150,000 VRC Desirable S. 1400m LR at Flemington.

Her name may be a slightly back-to-front version of Snitzel, but she certainly knows how to go forwards, and at only her third start, she led well into the straight before being overtaken by Palomares and Booklet. Zelsnitz is trained at Caulfield by Peter Moody for her owner-breeder Carl Holt and won first-up this season at Kilmore on 10 October.

Zelsnitz is a third-generation descendant of Canadian Horse of the Year and distinguished broodmare Fanfreluche, and her dam is a half-sister to champion French 2YO colt Holy Roman Emperor (by Snitzel’s paternal grand-sire Danehill). Unfortunately, Eishin Maysville, a winner in Japan and the dam of five winners, died in September 2009.

Snitzel has had an excellent spring, with seven Australian winners, most recently Saramenha (ex Speedy Topaze by Woodman) who scored brilliantly by 6.5 lengths in class record time at Rosehill last Saturday, 30 October, to become the first winner from her sire’s second crop. On top of that, Snitzel has now compiled nine 2YO winners from his 2007 stint in Japan, including Group-placed Rurinigana and stakes-placed Floreal.

Snitzel, a Group 1-winning son of champion sire Redoute’s Choice, was second on the 2009/10 Australian 1st Season Sires’ list with $1.2 million prizemoney and ten winners, including G2 Chance Bye who opened her 3YO account by placing in the AJC Silver Shadow S. G3. Also making a strong impression for Snitzel this season are the Gerald Ryan-trained Top Drop, (2nd, AJC Stan Fox S. G2) and October winners Tigress Lily, Switmoa, Yorkshire Lad & Third Man.
