After his debut 2YO win, Real Steel raced exclusively in Group company, proved himself a formidable competitor over five seasons in Japan's world-class Pattern racing, winning at 3, 4 & 5 at his favourite 1800-metre distance and regularly testing Horses of the Year Kitasan Black & Maurice and Champion 3YO Colt Duramente before his Group 1 triumph in Dubai.

"He's a beautiful horse, he's got lots of quality. It was a big effort from the horse, he had a tough trip and was out wide but has toughed it out. He never runs a bad race. He's a very brave horse and has had to do it the hard way."

- Champion jockey Ryan Moore after Real Steel's Dubai Turf G1 win.

The Dubai Turf was rated the world's second-leading 1800m race in 2018 and 47th= on the list of the world's top 100 Group 1 events. Its standing has been significantly enhanced by the class of the past 7 winners, four of them from Japan: World Champions Just A Way (won the race in 2014) & Almond Eye (2019), Champion Older Mare Vivlos (2017) and Real Steel (2016).

Bred by Katsumi Yoshida's internationally famous Northern Farm, Real Steel offers high-octane genetics on both sides of his pedigree.

His sire Deep Impact died in July 2019 and his global legend has only grown since then, thanks to his 9 consecutive domestic stallion Premierships and 53 Group 1 winners - 15 of them successful at that level in Europe, the United States, Hong Kong, Dubai & Australia. Deep Impact's sire sons including Kizuna, Mikki Isle, Real Impact & Silver State are now beginning to make their mark in Japan & Australia.

Real Steel is a great-grandson of the glorious Champion racemare (10 Group 1 wins) & 'blue hen' Miesque, founder of a superb 21st century family of champions.  Other notable descendants of Miesque include Danehill’s Champion 2YO daughter Rumpelstiltskin, Champion Sire Kingmambo, Champion 3YO Fillies Alpha Centauri  & East Of The Moon and Real Steel's close relative, the 2018 French Derby winner Study Of Man (by Deep Impact).

Like 8 other Group 1 winners including his  2021 Breeders' Cup-winning sister Loves Only You, Real Steel is bred on the remarkably effective Deep Impact/Storm Cat cross.  Only Northern Dancer repeats in the first five removes of his pedigree and, importantly for Australian breeders, he is free of both Danzig and Danehill.

Deep Impact's influence in Australia has already been significant with 4 Group 1 winners (Profondo, Real Impact, Fierce Impact and Tosen Stardom, plus 7 other stakes performers) from only 36 runners. Notably, Spring Champion S. G1 winner Profondo, Group 1-placed Bucharest and Group performed Glint of Hope & Kazuhiko are all out of mares by sons of Danehill.

  • Champion Older Male Miler in UAE in 2015/16
  • Best World Thoroughbred Ranking:  120 (in 2016)

Trained for Sunday Racing by Yoshito Yahagi at Ritto Training Center near Kyoto, Real Steel won four races from 17 starts including the 2015 Kyodo News Service Hai G3 and the 2017 Mainichi Okan G2 on either side of his 2016 Meydan Dubai Turf victory, where he defeated Euro Charline (subsequently 2nd to Belardo in the Newbury Lockinge S. 1600m G1).

His best placings were superior performances at the highest level of Japan's elite racing: 2nd in the 2016 Satsuki Sho G1 (to Duramente) and Kikka Sho G1 (to Kitasan Black), the first and third legs of the 3YO Japan Triple Crown, and runner-up to international champion (and now leading young dual-hemisphere sire) Maurice in the 2016 Tenno Sho G1.

Real Steel's career-high rating of 120 in 2016 ranked him in the Mile category alongside European Group 1 winners Lightning Spear & Vadamos, and above Beauty Only & Designs On Rome (Hong Kong), Belardo (UK) and Black Heart Bart & Kermadec (Australia).

Real Steel retired to stud in Japan & Australia in 2019 with total prizemoney of approximately $A10 million. His first yearlings, including six offered by Arrowfield, will sell at Magic Millions in January 2022.
