New stakeswinner heads Snitzel treble

Snitzel today underlined his claim as one of Australia’s most progressive 2nd season sires with a 1-2-3 sequence of brilliant victories, headed by his second stakeswinner, the 3YO filly Zelsnitz (ex Eishin Maysville by Jade Hunter).

Bred and raced by her Sydney breeder Carl Holt, Zelsnitz took out the Race-Tech-sponsored MRC Twilight Glow S. 1400m LR at Sandown by four lengths from the favourite Palomares and Booklet. It was the athletic filly’s second win from four starts, and confirmed the merit of her third placing in the VRC Desirable S. LR on Melbourne Cup day.

It also enhanced her already impressive pedigree. Danehill, Redoute’s Choice & Snitzel on the top line are complemented on the bottom line by Zelsnitz’s descent from the champion Canadian filly and great broodmare Fanfreluche, ancestress of a host of Group One winners including champion sires Flying Spur and Encosta de Lago.

Twenty minutes after Zelsnitz saluted in Melbourne, 2YO filly Saramenha (ex Speedy Topaze by Woodman) won by almost 5 lengths over 1100 metres at Rosehill – the second win in three starts for the 2010 Melbourne Premier Sale graduate from the Bellerive Stud yearling draft.

Around 25 minutes later, Snitzel’s treble was completed in New Zealand by 3YO gelding St Beune (ex Miss Candy by Canny Lad) whose reputation was again boosted when he defeated the highly regarded Queen of Pop at Tauranga. St Beune attracted attention with his trial win in September, and was third at his race debut, at Ellerslie on 23 October.

Snitzel has been represented by seven stakes performers in 2010 including G2 juvenile winner Chance Bye, SW Zelsnitz and Yorkshire Lad (recently stakes-placed at Flemington). Snitzel (7th) and Starcraft (3rd) currently hold top 10 positions on the Australian 2nd Season Sires’ list.
